INTERVIEW

Ghosts and Haunted Houses
in Madison Virginia

Personal Interview with Sue Reynolds on November 11, 1995.  Mrs. Reynolds lives in a house that she believes is haunted in Madison County.

Interviewer: Who lives in the house besides you?
Mrs. Reynolds: Just my husband

Interviewer: Have you ever seen a ghost?
Mrs. Reynolds: I have never seen a ghost, but strange things happen in my house.

Interviewer: What has happened in your house?
Mrs. Reynolds: I had two rockers upstairs in my house. I placed them so that they faced the center of the room. Everyday I would find that the chairs had been moved over to the windows--almost, as if someone had been sitting in the looking out the window. I would, once again, move them back to where I had them. Finally, I got so tired of moving them that I just got rid of them. Also, the chairs in my kitchen are constantly being moved away from the table over to the windows.

Recently, over the last month, I have seen shadows in the house. They move so fast that you can just barely catch a glimpse of them. I can be in another room and hear a loud noises--like something has fallen--but when I look, I can not find anything out of its place. This happens all the time. My dogs do not even move or bark when this happens. Normally they are really protective of the house and would bark and carry on at strange sounds, but not the ones made by the ghosts.

Interviewer: Are there particular rooms that this takes place in?
Mrs. Reynolds: No, it happens all over the house--in any room.

Interviewer: Do you ever notice that it get colder or smell any strange smells when the strange phenomena happens?
Mrs. Reynolds: You can feel a breeze. No strange smells. A candle never burns normally in my house. It always flickers. One evening my husband fell asleep on the couch: he was awakened by a breeze blowing on his face--enough to make his mustache move which tickled him. He said that it felt like someone was standing over him, lightly blowing air over his face.

Interviewer: Has any tragedy occurred in your house or reasons for the haunting?
Mrs. Reynolds: A women poisoned her husband , his mother, and their dog, so that she could inherit the property. I can't remember the exact year it happened; I'd say around 1965. She was a Tate before she married Herdon May. We bought the property and tore down the old house that was there and built a new house on the same foundation. We built the house in 1991 and moved into it in 1992. I think they [the murder victims] are the ghosts haunting my house.

Interviewer: Has anyone besides you experienced any of this strange phenomena?
Mrs. Reynolds: Yes. My husband has experienced some of the same things I have. My neighbor, Ms. Cave, lived in the old house for two years that stood on the same foundation as our new house. She, also, has experienced some of the same sort of things I have. Apparently the ghosts were more active in the old house than they are now.

Interviewer: Did the strange occurrences happen as soon as you moved into the new house?
Mrs. Reynolds: Yes, since the first day that we moved into the house.

Interviewer: Can you think of any normal explanation for these experiences other than ghosts?
Mrs. Reynolds: No, nothing other than the ghosts. I can find no other logical explanation!
